Tonight was packing night.  Craig is an expert packer.  As we often say, I do the ‘gross motor’ – he does the ‘fine motor’.  In this case, I shopped and collected and planned – he did the nit-picky detail work about what would fit where…  We’re quite a team – usually.

I thought I was being very careful.  Our philosophy is not to arrive in Kenya as the ‘muzungus with everything’.  In other words, I didn’t want to arrive with suitcases full of Canadian items. We feel strongly about supporting the local economy – I’d rather buy there than here.

That being said, there are some items that just can’t be bought easily in Kenya.  Or that are too expensive.  Pens, for example, are outrageous – like gold!  And books and other school-related things to share with the children – that would be hard for me to find there.  And well-made, durable toys and games that the children will enjoy?  I’ve had a whole three years almost to think about what would work.  The result?  A bed full of things that needed to somehow, magically fit into my suitcase.

Today we stuffed, crammed, weighed, chose – and still we are over weight (the bags I mean.  Us?  That’s a different story entirely….!)  So my prayer?  That KLM will take pity on us as we make our way through check-in.  Time will tell…

Seven more sleeps!!

Until the next time, Cathy.
