I couldn’t write about my time in Nairobi without talking a bout Julia. (This will totally embarrass her – but she’s up for it!)
Be honest. When you see her picture I’m sure the last word that comes to mind would be “missionary”. But that is what she is. From Canada, no less….
Julia is a girl from the Soo – Sault Ste. Marie. She is in her early 30s, a music major from The University of Western Ontario. She has been with International Teams in Nairobi since November 2006 and works with a group of ladies from Rwanda, refugees who have been here in Nairobi since the early 90s. She teaches them English, shares bible study with them and helps them develop their sewing business.
The rest of the time? Julia lives Nairobian life to the full. She negotiates the streets of Nairobi, a natural driver on these wild roads. She is referred to as a “Kenyan cowboy” – speaking Swahili fluently as well as the more ‘earthy’ street dialect. But more important, she spreads an exuberant and contagious joy wherever she goes. We taught Jack, her team-mate, the term “crazy Canuck” – it seems particularly appropriate!
Julia – life in Nairobi would be dull without you!! And you bring a whole new meaning to the word “missionary”!
